Go Nuts For Banana & Peanut Butter Smoothie
I love this gorgeous smoothie for breakfast; it’s really filling and makes me want to eat healthily for the rest of the day. I like to drink it when I get back from a run first thing in the morning.
Ingredients & Method
1 x banana
1 x tablespoon of peanut butter
250ml unsweetened almond milk
1 x heaped teaspoon of Maca powder
1 x teaspoon of cacao powder
Add all the ingredients to a blender and whizz until smooth.
The Health Benefits
Maca powder is related to cauliflower and kale and native to Peru. It’s high in potassium, calcium, magnesium and zinc, and contains some B vitamins. It’s also a good source of iron, which is good news for vegetarians like me! Peanut butter is full of healthy fats and contains potassium plus protein. Bananas are also an amazing source of potassium as well as containing vitamins B6 and C, copper and manganese. Did you know that the humble banana is also rich in pectin and resistant starch, which may moderate blood sugar levels after meals, reducing the appetite by slowing the emptying of your stomach? And this means they’re good news if you’re on a diet.
Switch It Up
Feel free to use chocolate almond milk instead of regular, swap the banana for frozen berries, or add a handful of fresh baby spinach for extra nutritional benefit. Alternative nut butters like cashew or almond can be swapped for the peanut butter.
